If the ACC had added WVU, then it may not have made the mistake


by insisting on using the divisions for basketball too. FWIW I do know the SEC was doing that at the time, so I think that is where the ACC may have gotten the idea. Assuming there was no divisions in basketball, then the divisions could/would have look like this with the protected cross-division games.

Atlantic/Coastal
WVU-UMD
VT-UVA
Wake-Duke
NC State-UNC
Clemson-GT
FSU-Miami or Miami-FSU

Since VT would be playing UVA and WVU every year and both schools might be VT's 2 most important rivals, I would be willing to sacrifice the Miami-VT rivalry in that case. Although I don't think the Clemson-FSU rivalry was as valuable once its stopped being known as the "Bowden Bowl." At that point the rivalry's value was depended upon both teams being good/great in the same season because there really wasn't any other storyline associated with the game.
