Hollifield, Henry, and Hunter were all considered potentially symbolic too
Hollifield and Hunter came to VT but ultimately the needle didn't move much. Henry didn't come and the needle really didn't move much.

It'd be nice to have Ford. But his going elsewhere isn't much more than that. Had he chosen VT, it would be nice but not program changing or symbolic over the long run.

Not a gambler, but would take VT if I were
We are going to Florida State and winning. I think our coaching staff is even better than most Hokie fans realize. Sure, we've had some recruiting misses, BUT.....our talent level overall is better than what it was a few years ago and Fuente, Foster and crew and Coach. Add to that the new era at FSU, and I think we win the football game.

I traded a few posts with Will about this
many years ago.

I've read the site/boards since 99 but didn't join/post until a few years later.

My reason for not subscribing is mainly - I already spend way too much time on here - it is a great site, and I enjoy the back and forth on message boards from all people, not just die hard Hokies.

When I discussed this with Will I had noticed that a few of the headlines on the home page were teasers to TSL Pass articles. Now, if it is a straight who, what, when and where journalism 101 type article - the first thing I would do is go search somewhere else for the info - not really what website owners want.

In today's world that type info is already out there and I don't see much of that type stuff behind the TSL paywall now - never was a whole lot.

If it is a true "scoop" or in depth analysis I understand and fully respect paying for that - and with the quality of the free stuff I read on here the subscription cost is minor and very likely well worth it. I've been tempted for certain articles, just don't pull the trigger because there is so much free stuff to read - and I realize that can be a quality vs quantity decision.

Just food for thought from another long time reader of TSL that doesn't subscribe.

I think that sentiment - and @Techsupport 's sentiment as well - was part
of the reason the Ford loss hurt so much. He was going to be some kind of symbol that VT recruiting was turning the tide on the top in state kids going out of state - to programs like PSU, FSU and Clemson specifically.

But while we may be sick of the conversation re: top in state kids leaving, it's not particularly new as you pointed out. What is relatively new, is the way that VT is going into other states, North Carolina in a huge way, and taking the top talent. Our approach to recruiting is evolving. Also, so many of today's "in state" kids might not be from Virginia and many did not grow up with this deep passion for VT as they used to.

How much would you pay for a UNLV at VT ticket?
Because the Michigan ticket was going to have a face value of greater than $165 like the ND game will this year.

I wouldn't pay more than $40 for a ticket to see a team that has won 12 games over the last 3 years.

That's what Michigan took from us, lots and lots of money. That's just the face value on tickets, Michigan on your home schedule drives season ticket sales like ND did this year.

You don't replace Michigan with UNLV. There are only about 15 schools in the country that fit that role.

Yes, although if the ACC decides to expand to 16 or 20 members
then it would be interesting to see what they do with the 4 NC schools. Would they place them 1 group? Place 1 in each of the 4 groups? Place 2 in 2 groups? Keep in mind regardless if a conference expands to 16, 18, or 20, they would still be divided into 2 divisions of 8, 9, or 10 members. The same would hold true for the other power conferences.

If we are using the ACC for example and the ACC had 16 members, then the 2 divisions could look like this regardless whether the ACC uses the rotating pod method or not.

North
BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame, Louisiville, WVU, UVA, and VT

South
Wake, Duke, UNC, NC State, Clemson, GT, FSU, and Miami

Yes, I know the North isn't as balanced and there are some rivalry issues (i.e. VT-Miami, UVA-UNC, etc) that would make this a "no go" in the current environment. Once the power conferences broke away to form their new whatever, the ACC-North or ACC-South would break away to form a new conference.

ACC-North = Remains the ACC (8 members)
ACC-South = Metro 2.0 Conference (8 members)

If the 8-10 conferences (depending on if there are 4 or 5 power conferences) pool their resources, then there should be no desire to expand to 10, 12, or 14 members because it would mean adding a member from the group they just separated from. The bylaws could be written so a conference of 8 or 10 members could be divided into 2 divisions of 4 or 5 in order to play a CCG. Another possibility is the CCG is eliminated in favor of adding an extra round to the Playoff.

Sorta like...
Let's say ACC was to go to 20. In that scenario I suppose all conferences would be that #.
If so would ACC be maybe look like this?

Division Bowden/Howard
FSU
GT
NC State
Wake
Clemson

Division Beamer Welsh
VT
UVA
Miami
UNC
Duke

Division Rockne/Majors
ND
Pitt
Cuse
BC
WVU

Division National
Texas
Texas Tech
TCU
Louisville
Ok State

Just a scenario. So Irish peeps. Please do not bed wet. I am sure a better divisional set up would be catered to the leprechauns.

She was a great player but . . .
there are very few former great players who make good HEAD coaches. There's also the issue of the lifestyle required. It's a 24/7/365 job if done right. Look around the country and find married women with young children in these jobs . . . . there aren't very many.

I think her experiences as an assistant were at Syracuse and Maryland prior to VT; hardly softball powers. I could see the possibility that she would stay on as pitching coach should the new coach asked her but head coach, no.

There are a few here who look at things differently. I am responding
under your post but not in any way should you consider that as critical of you, I simply mean to clarify my position. I like unrestricted (but cordial, civil and respectful) speech, as I have never cried that I was offended by anything anyone else said. I am not required to read anything and neither is anyone else, so I like the idea of free speech where adults share opinions or ignore as they see fit. The TOS allows the ownership/management to delete that which they believe violates the TOS, which is another way of saying "posts that they do not like". I accept that it is their site and they have the right to make the rules. As you say "threads have been nuked" where I did not participate in the discussion but I did want to read them. The last sentence above says "follow that and your posts will stand" which demonstrates I did not make myself clear. I am not so much concerned with MY posts as I want the OTHERS' posts to remain, as I and others may not have read them yet, and I want to see all viewpoints (even the ones I do not agree with or that I think are poorly thought out). Like you, TECHFAN, I am not afraid of the debate etc, as nothing is written that would lead me to say I am offended, but thanks for the civil conversation.

If that is the goal of the power conferences, then there might as well
be 2 NCAA basketball tournaments; 1 for the power conferences and 1 for the mid-majors. Otherwise, the power conference schools should be willing to play these mid-majors with great records (i.e. Vermont, Montana, UC Davis, UNC-Asheville, College of Charleston, etc.) more so it gives the Committee more data when trying to decide between a power conference bubble team vs. a mid-major bubble team.

I don't think the post was dumb but the question you raised has been
answered convincingly to the contrary in (pretty excellent) subscriber content within the last couple of days. Losing Ford or any other premium in state recruit to the likes of Penn State, FSU, Clemson, etc... does not feel very good and might lead you to believe that not much has changed in recruiting under Fuente's watch. But the state of recruiting is in great shape and really improving - particularly using the metric of Power 5 offers given to the recruits we have landed. I won't get into the details because that is what the subscriber content is there for and I respect the producers of that content.

I think @Chris Coleman was genuinely curious about why you haven't subscribed and maybe just "phrased" the question in what appeared to be a confrontational way. 90% of this is about tone and context easily being lost by reading a comment instead of actually hearing it. If you love Hokies football - or any sport for that matter - TSL is well worth the cost, IMO.

I'd be surprised if Dean came here but you never know...
Whit has both JMU and Auburn connections. Dean is from Virginia and has most of his coaching roots in Virginia. I don't know how much Auburn is paying Dean, but Auburn is a better job than Tech softball-wise. Plus Dean is extremely competitive and the SEC is as competitive as it gets. Maybe Whit makes another big investment like he did with baseball? I'm sure Whit has been thinking about candidates for 6-12 months. I expect another quality hire by Whit. Mickey Dean would be an exceptional hire.

Yes, I can think of 1 scenario where a conference may decide to reduce
the number of conference games while expanding its total membership. However, in order for the scenario to work, a couple of assumptions have to be made.

1. The plan is for the creation of 4-5 super conferences with 16-20 members in each.
2. The super conferences have to been working together from a media rights standpoint.
3. The super conferences have to create enough separation from the rest of the group to minimize any threat of political pressure in the event they leave to form a new association or division level.
4. Once the super conferences form the new whatever, they break up into smaller (regional?) conferences.
5. The new whatever pool their resources together for the media rights to where it looks like pre-1984 NCAA or any of the current pro models.

By reducing the number of cross-division games to 1, then it will make it easier for the 2 divisions to eventually split and form 2 conferences because they don't have a strong connection with each other. They are willing to go this route because everyone makes more money in the long run than under the competition model and shifting back to the regional conference model allows them to maximize regional rivalries. Also, it could potentially increase the exposure for all the members because any member could have its game televised on any network willing to do business with the new whatever. I guess it is even possible the various conference networks could be merged into 1 entity.
