The offense under Willis
does have the potential to be more dynamic. The key is for him to make good decisions and not force his passes.

I agree Willis will surpase ## by JJ
Coach Fu picked Willis and he is much better passer . Just lacks game experience in Fu system . we will have more T/O but more passing which opens up running. …………… will be more exciting. The game plan Saturday was poor. we are where we were expected to be this early in season...……………. record wise...……….. still have a way to go

Nobody is blaming the lose on JJ. Everybody including JJ is smart enough
To know the best player on your team is the QB on the bench who hasn’t played yet. JJ just had the unenviable position of having 3 QB’s on the bench behind him. Three QB’s who from what little we know all have talent. It looks like Willis is next man up but he will probably have as much or more heat on him as JJ did. That’s the nature of the position.

You would think that the NFL would be smart enough to have a late November
or December MNF game in Tampa and have the September game at GB, MN, Buf.
But who would expect them to not out smart themselves?

Was in meetings for most of the week.
Meetings were in the Marriott on the Pest side of the river right up against the Danube. We had views like the attached picture right out the windows of the conference room all week long.

Budapest has pretty decent night life -- they're big on "ruin bars" built up in abandoned buildings. Lots of big thermal spas, though I didn't hit any this time or one previous visits. The Castle District in Buda (opposite side of the Danube) is pretty -- the castle itself appears to have been destroyed regularly over the life of the city. Plenty of other cool things to see. It's not as jam-packed as many of the big tourist cities in Western Europe, but it's a pretty good place to visit.

I anticipate a 13-20 loss at Duke.
If that means we shouldn't be concerned about the QB situation, and ought to be more focused on the Defense, then ok.

I'll give you a Lombardi quote framed on my office wall
Winning is not a sometimes thing it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in awhile; you don't do things right once in awhile; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately so is losing.
There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers, played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in everything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.
Every time a football player goes to ply his trade he's got to play from the ground up - from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's ok. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart he's never going to come off the field second.
And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh head to head combat.
I don't say these things because I believe in the brute nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he's exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
Vincent Lombardi

We did not see that Saturday.

Yes, that's accurate.
But the other assistants on the roster were doing a very poor job of evaluating at the time, and they weren't coming up with any other players to recruit. In the end, it was Buzz who gave the go-ahead to offer those three guys anyway.

The issue isn't a Buzz vs. Roccaforte thing, FWIW. Just a staff chemistry issue.

Something worth considering is maybe ESPN expects the ratings during
the week to be lower than on the weekend. If there is any truth to that assumption, then it may make sense for ESPN to "waste" a Duke-UNC game on a weeknight slot.

As far as markets outside VA go, I am not sure how many people (ACC fans and non-ACC fans) are truly interested in a UVA-VT bball game. For games that start at 7pm/7:30pm, people are either still at work, just leaving work, starting to fix dinner, or eating dinner in the other time zones. Now people on the East Coast may be more inclined to watch a ranked UVA play a good VT in bball than say Clemson vs. Syracuse or Wake vs. FSU. However, I am not sure if that would be true if the match-up was some combination of Duke, L'ville, UNC, Notre Dame, and UVA.

All of our (I'm a Hoo) with Duke, UNC, Louisville, and Notre Dame are on
the weekend, except that the UNC game is on what I have heard called "The Big Monday." So, there may well be something to your thought about ESPN marketing games.

Oddly, both of our games with you are during the week so, if they are drawing schedules with a view towards marketing them, they are not drawing them with a view towards marketing in Virginia.

That decision was pretty much Joe Paterno's to go to the Big 10....
The Big East was too basketball-centric at the time and the ACC never made a wholehearted attempt back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Paterno likely thought the ACC was also too basketball-centric and if he did he was absolutely right. Paterno liked the Big 10 because back in that time (early 1990's), the Big 10 didn't recruit the East like they do today. The Midwest was still rich in talent and they usually went to Texas or California or Florida to find skilled talent. Paterno believed that his program would do well since they could continue to recruit the top talent in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, DC, and New York and even NOVA.

IMHO, I think if Penn State were looking for a conference 10-15 years ago (before there was the BTN), they would've joined the ACC just based on the rich talent in the Southeast and the fact that the ACC had some football schools like FSU, Miami, Clemson, and Virginia Tech. The ACC was a mediocre football conference when PSU was an independent. The Big 10 was very good and had much more television exposure than the ACC. Also, Paterno never wanted to play teams like Tech because a loss would likely hurt his recruiting efforts in Virginia. Joe kept it safe and played Rutgers and Temple in the region. He even stopped playing Maryland, Pitt, and WVU.

I dunno...I think they'll look for the money
PSU's athletics history was with BC, WVU, Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers, etc...yet there they are in the Big 10, and seemingly pretty happy with it

plenty of other programs have made moves that have little to do with history and everything to do with grass that's greener from dollars
