We never would have been in the BE at all


I agree completely that the denial of Penn State by the Big East was a monumental mistake on the part of the conference. But I also think that created a void that benefited us directly in 1990. Basically they had to have an 8th team and we were viewed as the best alternative -- likely with a little help from West Virginia in that regard.

If things hadn't played out the way they did, it's highly likely that we would now be members of the American Athletic Conference and tied pretty closely at the hip to East Carolina. Just my opinion, of course.
