VT was on the SEC's radar in the late '90s when the SEC was exploring

the possibility of expanding to 16 members. Miami, WVU, and VT were identified as potential candidates with the 16th member never being identified. Miami ultimately killed the deal for whatever reason and JW used the SEC's interest to leverage full membership in the Big East in exchange for VT re-committing to the Big East Football Conference.
