A lot of smoke suggesting that we could have had the slot taken by Missouri. But we weren't on the SEC's radar at all prior to that point (and that is assuming we were then).

Not something that is pleasant to consider, but Virginia Tech just doesn't have a lot of individual leverage on its own within the broader context of conference realignment. We made the most of our invitation to the Big East in the early 1990s and then did something similar in our first decade or so within the ACC. But we arguably made it into both of those conferences through "back door" processes.
