I suspect the only reason people have a problem with the zipper model


is because VT and UVA weren't paired up from the beginning. The only reason VT and UVA ended up in the same division is because the ACC decided to use the same divisions for basketball and any other sports that required divisions. VT and UVA wanted to be able to play each other twice a year as a conference game in basketball and the only way to do that at the time was to be in the same division. If the ACC had decided to not use divisions in basketball, then the football divisions could have looked like this with the protected pairings.

Atlantic/Coastal
BC-UMD
VT-UVA
Wake-Duke
NC State-UNC
Clemson-GT
FSU-Miami or Miami-FSU (take your pick here)

Then when Pitt and Syracuse joined the ACC, the divisions could have looked like this with the protected pairings.

Atlantic/Coastal
BC-Syracuse or Syracuse-BC (take your pick here)
Pitt-UMD
VT-UVA
Wake-Duke
NC State-UNC
Clemson-GT
FSU-Miami or Miami-FSU (take your pick here)

Naturally when UMD left the ACC for the Big Ten and L'ville was picked to replace UMD, then L'ville could still assume UMD's slot and be paired with Pitt (aka the Ohio River Valley Rivalry).
