Even though VT was winning 10 games and conference championships


those achievements always felt a little hollow to me because the ACC has always been a basketball-first conference and all the "great football schools" were going through a down spell at the same time (relatively speaking).

If the ACC had taken the Big East schools at the same time, then things might have been a little different for the ACC. I'm not sure how much the ACC's football image would have improved given that WVU would still be likely left out of the plan. Also, Pitt and Syracuse really wasn't setting the world on fire in football. UMD probably would have still left for the Big Ten. The ACC would have still been locked into this long term GOR and it would have still taken the same amount of time to launch the ACCN.

I do believe it was a mistake for the ACC to take BC over WVU. If the ACC had taken WVU, then there may have been no reason to expand to 14 members. Although adding the Backyard Brawl to the ACC's inventory could be valuable content. However, there is no clear candidate truly worth of being #14. Syracuse football is a shell of its former self and historically the program has never really had any serious longevity. Temple and Rutgers don't really add any value in football. We all know the real story with Fredo, so no reason to revisit it.
