Where is the "athleticism" in competitive gardening or cooking though?
If American football is going to die in the near future, then there will be a period of time where schools, who built there "business model" on football and men's basketball, will suffer until they have figured out a new business model that the public will financially support. I am not just talking about the college level, but HS level too. It is possible that some schools may not be able to recover once the bubble has popped. It is even possible the big name programs (i.e. Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Penn State, etc.) may suffer the most because their fan base is "hardcore American football." The reality is that Notre Dame fans, like most college fans, would rather show up to Notre Dame Stadium on a Saturday afternoon to watch Notre Dame play Butler (DI-FCS) in football than to see Notre Dame compete in competitive cooking, competitive sewing, competitive gardening, competitive ax throwing, or any other "sport" you want consider. Now that might change with time, but it certainly won't happen overnight relatively speaking.
