There was no "bait and switch", ever
Notre Dame was loud and clear and up front with both the Big East in 1995 and the ACC in 2012:
"Football will never join, it will never be included."
Full disclosure. No bait and switch involved.
I disagree with many of the details of your post, but not your overall point.
I totally agree that the ACC needs to figure out how it is going to expand and/or survive without ND football in the equation.
ND is not very likely to join the ACC in football in the foreseeable future.
Here is another piece of evidence that ND plans to keep football independent.
A "Working Group" of four people is set up to consider expanding the playoffs to up to 16 teams.
One is the Big 12 Commissioner. One is the SEC Commissioner. One is the Mountain West Commissioner.
The fourth?
Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick.
That is a very interesting development and a very interesting working group.
If Swarbrick is on the four member working group, I believe that an independent ND will have a favorable path to playoff access in the future.
