The notion that it's easy to schedule ND is just not so
Notre Dame decides who Notre Dame wants to play. It takes two to tango and Notre Dame is one of those programs that can decide who it wants to dance with and who it doesn't, because literally EVERYONE wants to play the Irish. There is probably not a single athletic director in the country who would take a call from the ND athletic director and say, "no, I really don't think we can find room to play your team anytime soon."
There are other programs that aren't easy to get on your schedule, particularly in a home-for-home -- Ohio State, Alabama, Texas to name a few. Jim Weaver deserves tremendous credit for some of the non-conference games he scheduled. But even the Ohio States and Bamas would jump at the chance to schedule Notre Dame.
Fact of the matter is if you aren't one of the blue bloods, and you aren't a program that has a long-time relationship with ND (think Pitt or Purdue, for example), you'd be darn lucky to get a chance to play a 2-for-1 with Notre Dame.
