The SEC touted AAU status of A&M and Mizzou when they were added....

In a media world driven by perception, AAU status is a nice sound bite.

FYI: the SEC is in overdrive trying to improve its academic reputation. Several SEC schools are offering free rides to northeastern students with halfway decent standardized test scores. More than ever, the SEC is focusing on academics, and they are not trying to hide it.

You cite the fact that less than 1/3 of the SEC is in the AAU; that is exactly why they are looking for AAU schools. If not AAU, then a tier 1 academic institution. However there are not many tier 1 academic institutions the SEC would want that are non-AAU, except of course for VT.
