Orlando Sentinal's Bianchi lobbying again for UCF to Big 12

In my view, UCF's candidacy for a spot in the P5 is clouded only by the fact that, as a university, it is somewhat of a Johnny-come-lately with a directional name. Its location is both a positive (Orlando has lots of positives) and a negative (it is a long way from Austin and the ACC and SEC don't need another Florida school).

I have never been too excited about UConn or Cincinnati. I just have doubt that football will ever resonate in the northeast, that there are enough nearby recruits to provide core support for the Husky program or that football can ever take off when the stadium in Hartford is so remote from campus in Storrs. Cincinnati has been competitive for a long time, but in football I just don't see how it can grow given the facility and money limitations it has. Memphis has some of the same issues and weak academics. South Florida is a lesser candidate than UCF for a variety of reasons.

I still don't see how the Big 12 can make the money work by expanding to 12 given the options available. Even a football-only deal for BYU would be problematic. Honestly, I think a 10-team conference is the best formula, but it is not going to be the norm again for a while. If the Big 12 chooses to expand, and I'm not sure it will, it really ought to take a hard look at going large and taking a gamble on what schools can become rather than what they are right now. That might even mean taking more than two schools.

Of all the non- p5 schools, it is hard to say that any of them have better long term potential than UCF.
