I think it’s building, the highest ranked Conference Champions component

would make it so the the Conferences will want the conference championship games to be between the two highest ranked teams so they have the best chance of getting their conference Champion in the playoff. Especially if they do 8 instead of 12, with 2 at large.

However, if they expand to 12 with all 10 Conferences getting a bid and 2 at large, then it is probably not necessary.
