That's why conference limits are necessary

With a 12 team playoff, here is my view of the best compromise.

5 guaranteed P5 champions
1 guaranteed G5 champion (highest ranked)
6 wild card spots with conditions
- A second G5 champion (if this second team is ranked in the top 15)
- If ND is ranked in top 10 and has 2 or less losses
- No more than 3 teams from a single conference (SEC would be capped at 3)
- Selection based on CFP ranking of teams that are not P5 champions
- Worst case is ND gets in (spot 1 of 6), SEC gets two extra teams (spots 2 and 3 of 6), G5 gets a second team (spot 4 of 6), and the remaining two spots are spread across ACC, PAC, B10, B12).

If G5 got two teams in, and ND got in, and SEC got 3, and B10 got 3, then the worst case is that potentially up to three P5 conferences could only have one team. But that is the absolute worst case. And every P5 conference would have at least one team in.
