And to whose benefit would it be if conferences fractured and disposed of
The lesser programs? It would make it possible for ESPN to pay for only the most marketable units. How does that help the schools overall? In the ACC ESPN pays for four P5 programs in NC because the ACC keeps those schools in the fold. If we go with your "elites only" plan, UNC would make the cut and a weak "maybe" for Duke. The ACC is resigned, I think, to the eventual dispersal of the conference. You should not just concede that fact. It may be inevitable but the conference should take any steps necessary to see that all ACC schools have a safe landing space.
I see posts about the SEC dropping Vanderbilt or Missouri. They think it's sensible because ESPN has persuaded them that those schools are holding them back. The SEC actually thinks that they are "partners" with ESPN working toward a common goal. They haven't woken up to the reality that ESPN is leading them down the same path that suffocated the ACC.
The Alliance is one step toward putting the schools/conferences back in charge of college football.
