VT, the university, has for decades been more alike the Big 10
Just look through the list of peer institutions for VT that SCHEV approved. Even after a decade of athletic conference realignment, there's still twice as many Big 10 peers as SEC. In fact it's only because of realignment that it's only twice as many--Florida is the only charter member of the SEC to be on that list, but most of the original Big 10 is there.
The ACC is the most natural home for both VT athletics and academics, and while many VT football fans would pout and whine about it, the Big 10 is the next most natural for VT as a whole, and it's honestly not even a close comparison.
By the way, astute readers will note how much of that list is covered by the ACC-Big 10-PAC 12 alliance. Ideas like that alliance don't just get drawn up in a slapdash panic, there's good reasons why it's those 3 conferences, and only those 3. They didn't leave out the Big 12 or the AAC or whomever on accident. [Post edited by Synaesthesia at 04/09/2022 2:33PM]
