All DI members sponsor non-revenue sports though.


It doesn't matter whether it is water polo, ice hockey, wrestling, lacrosse, field hockey, skiing, baseball, golf, tennis, volleyball, softball, soccer, track and field, swimming and diving, cross country, beach volleyball, gymnastics, rowing, bowling, rifle, or fencing. The schools are not going to sacrifice the health of those sports they sponsor just to appease the appetites of the 2 revenue sports. If they do, then they risk having to deal with the federal and/or state governments for violation of Title IX and other similar laws.

I get that fans don't care about this because they only care about the 2 revenue sports. However, fans have no risk if their school violates federal and/or state laws. I can guarantee you that the schools will care about this issue. Likewise, I can guarantee you that the schools will discuss/explore the ramifications with each option/decision they explore/debate over. It happened in the early 1970s when the 3 divisions were created and it happened again in the late 70s - mid-80s when the DI schools decided to create 2 subdivisions for football. This is one of the reasons I would not be surprised if the changes the schools pass are not as radical as people are expecting will happen.
