... completely eliminate it, you can still stop by your local mechanic to give your car a good look-over every year.
Turn signals are easy to diagnose. I think they click faster when a bulb has burned out. Headlights should be noticeable. The only real difficult bulbs to diagnose are your backup lights, but you can always back into a spot in front of a glass storefront (after it closes), and look in your rear view mirror. You'll be able to see if you have a bulb out without dragging your wife or kids out to look (but that also works great).
