With the state you live in creating a mandatory payment for folks to maintain their cars. I live in a state that does not tax their citizens in that manner. When I get my oil changed twice per year they evaluate many of the same things covered in a tax ordered inspection without the additional charge. The mechanics have an incentive to compel me to do repairs there through their customer service and quality work. I am not forced to get work done to pass some state ordered inspection that I gave to pass. Of all the states I have lived in the one with mandatory inspections seem to have the sleaziest mechanics because they can get folks without a lot of car knowledge to get response they don’t need to pass inspection. And they lobby hard to keep that right. To each his own.
