I agree that the ADs will "follow the money."


What I may disagree with you on is that the "money" being tied to a specific number of sports. Given that the conference networks don't televise just football and men's basketball games, the "money" being generated for a school is based on the school's entire athletic department.

Also, some schools have already started charging "entrance fees" or selling season tickets for non-revenue sports. A case could be made that a sport is no longer a "non-revenue" sport if it is generating revenue for the school. Even though it may not be on the same scale as football or men's basketball, it may be enough to cover some/most/all of the admin and/or maintenance cost for said sport.
