I can absolutely see a path to the athletic departments at a large number of schools leaving the NCAA. I'm sure there are plenty of people driving an approach like this for their own self interest (agents, apparel companies and other key advertisers, media companies) who would benefit greatly from a professional environment linked to Universities. In that scenario the NCAA would be replaced by some other governing body and everything else wouldn't stay the same, it would be driven by their interests.

Every sports league has a governing body that sets the rules and provides oversight. This would be no different. Saying that there is a governing body doesn't mean it will have the same governing rules.
