I'm with mughal on this
Elsewhere in this thread I've said I wouldn't mind a single-payer system so long as it was state-run and not federally-run.
But I do honestly believe there is another solution that would work. Instead of fully socializing medicine, I think fully capitalizing it would work too.
Make the cost of healthcare transparent. Let the consumer know what it will cost and decide what they want to pay for. Allow for healthy, capitalistic competition between providers.
Any hospital that continues to try and charge upwards of $50,000 a day will be out of business within a month due to not having a single patient. Health care needs the same downward cost pressure that virtually every other industry (except higher education, which is a somewhat similar rant) has had to deal with since the 70's.
Healthcare has been operating for about fifty years now without anyone actually questioning what things cost. Every other industry has figured out how to streamline their operations and be cost-competitive, it is healthcare's turn.
