It would be the most fair thing to do, but the P5s won't agree to it.


Heck the Big Ten has basically already publicly stated it only supports the 5+1 proposal. I think the SEC may have even taken a similar position too, but the SEC's position may not be quite as "firm" as the Big Ten's position. The other "fair" proposal is to give the top 6 conference champions regardless of affiliation an automatic bid. The reason I say it is "fair" is because perceptually all 10 FBS conferences still have an equal shot to earn 1 of those bids at the beginning of the season, which is no different than it is now, plus it would still allow the stronger conferences to receive multiple bids.

Now all that assumes that only a 12-team playoff is an option. Personally, my preference is a 16-team playoff because you can have the 10 automatic bids and still have 6 at-large bids for the strong conferences.
