From the beginning, the playoff has been contrived to generate cash for ESPN. Do not allow yourself to think it is about producing a "True Champion." Before the CFP, before the BCS, we simply looked at post-season polls to find a champion. I was among the few that was okay with that. The argument was that "You can't have a real champion unless you win it on the field of play." Maybe so, but I liked the give-and-take arguments all year round about why the polls got it wrong. I'll be fine if they stay at four or grow it to 64. It's just a money play.
