That is because, being indy, he wants ND to have playoff "markers" .....

...against good teams from all P5 conferences:

"On scheduling at large, Swarbrick appears content with Notre Dame’s slates when married to the College Football Playoff contract that runs through 2025. The way Swarbrick sees it, Notre Dame needs a data point against at least four of the five Power 5 conferences if it’s going to make the field without a perfect regular season.

Think back to the 2015 season when Notre Dame had wins over the Big 12 (Texas), Pac-12 (USC), Big Ten (Michigan), and ACC (Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Wake Forest). What the Irish needed was one more Pac-12 or ACC data point, meaning a road win at Clemson or Stanford. Maybe the Irish still get left out for Oklahoma in that case, but they’d have a strong argument for inclusion.

With Georgia (2017, 2019), Arkansas (2020, 2025) and Texas A&M (2024-25) coming on the schedule in future years, the SEC will jump into that mix over the Big 12. That means instead of testing itself against a league concerned about just getting one team into the playoff, the Irish will go against a league that usually threatens for two bids.

“We want markers against the major conferences,” Swarbrick said. “We’ll always have a Pac-12 marker, we’ll have two every year. More often than not we’ll have a Big Ten marker. We’ll always have an ACC marker.

“The focus was trying to build some SEC markers into the schedule with A&M, Georgia and Arkansas. We’ve been able to do that.”
