Villanova doesn't sponsor football? I guess someone forgot to tell them

As long as I can remember Villanova has sponsored football and been a member of the DI-FCS subdivision. Currently they are a member of the CAA (formerly the Atlantic 10 formerly the Yankee Conference). FWIW Villanova even won the NCAA DI Football National Championship in 2009.

It is my understanding that when the Big East was forming its football conference it asked Villanova if they wanted to switch subdivisions. I believe the Big East asked Villanova at least 1 other time right around the time they were raiding Conference USA for replacement members. I believe someone mentioned on here that there informal talks between the ACC and Villanova, but nothing ever materialized from it. I am assuming the ACC wanted Villanova to switch subdivisions as a condition to joining and Villanova wasn't ready to make the switch. Something interesting about the Big East is it had 3-4 members participating in FCS football and at no time were they ever a member of the same conference.

Butler - currently participates in the Pioneer Football League
Georgetown - currently participates in the Patriot League
St. John's - participated in the Northeast Conference before discontinuing football in the late 1990s/early 2000s
Villanova - currently participates in the CAA
