So VT et al should pay Md rather than Md taking money from its endowment?
Don't understand this infatuation with Maryland. Maryland is a mismanaged corporation. Propping them up is throwing good money after bad.
I would like for VT to play WVU annually, so personally I can understand wanting them in the ACC for rivalry sake. Economics and academics aside, I'm there.
But economic and academic factors are part of the reality. Economically, they are not an obvious plus. Passionate fanbase? Check. Numbers of fans? Not sure. Future fanbase? Declining.
Academically, WVU is a charity case. They have some good programs (and I know top professionals who have come out of there...even hired a couple) but they are the lowest ranked academic institution in the P5. The ACC presidents would have to decide that part of their mission is to elevate academics in underserved areas.
Could a high level university be an anchor point for growth in an area that needs it? I think one could say that VT does this for Southwest Virginia and that VT football was clearly part of the equation. The ACC could take WVU on with this goal in mind. Problem there would be whether the state would match this commitment.
