Yes I get that, I was proposing an alternative approach to roster creation

Where you're not hunting for players who are demanding top dollar but instead using your assets to play a volume game to get as many kids coming through the program as possible to find diamonds in the rough.

Or in another example, you have more resources and you can take advantage of them.

An example, pretend you're FSU and spent $17M on basketball in 2020 compared to VT's $8M. You're buying all the top recruits you want but there's this ace shooter in Orlando named Hunter Cattoor who you think has potential but can't offer because you already signed six 7 footers. He's only got an offer from one crappy D1 school in a tiny conference and you can get him for $20k plus he's in-state so financial burden is minimal.

You're already paying your other recruits way more than that and some are bound to flame out so the rent-a-player approach could net you a guy who fills a specialty role for the price of one recruiting trip on a private jet.

FSU can easily foot that bill, VT can't.

I respect your basketball coaching acumen but college sports is rapidly moving from an athletic pursuit to a business, and if you have free resources that seems as good a use as any. Texas A&M just spent $25M on NIL for player payments, we can't even spend $5M on actual recruiting costs.
