If you're a school with a huge budget, like maybe Texas A&M, and you've recruited all your spots with everyone is getting $25k default out of the NIL pool they have.

You could easily offer that to a preferred walk-on you think is worthy of a scholarship then that season is basically a tryout for him and the guy on the end of the bench. Player preferences are always different, not everyone is going to chose a scholarship at UNT over the same compensation at TAMU. Everyone pushes players out so a scholarship is really only a 1 year committment.

It would be an interesting way to play the transfer portal game, use these kids as a way to cycle a bunch of HS kids through your system to see who sticks while picking off top talent from mid-majors at the end of each season.

Is it better than paying top dollar for future pros? Probably not, but if you're a guy who wants to "get old, stay old" as a team it would be a good approach.
