You raise an interesting point as to whether NATO members would honor their
Commitments to NATO. President Trump made the case many times that countries like Germany and many other members weren’t keeping up their end of the financial support of NATO. It’s also clear the United States is the only military capable of fighting Russia in an all out conflict. But the US would need the soldiers, equipment and money of its allies to win.
The question you raise was tested following 9/11 and with the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. In many cases, our NATO allies contributed brilliantly.
But to your point, how will NATO respond when Putin pressures the 14 NATO members that used to be in the Soviet orbit? Will Germany go to war with Russia to defend the Baltic states, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, etc?
NATO right now can stand in opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while promising to stay out of armed conflict. NATO’s order of battle is one thing when it’s standing as a deterrent to aggression, or even sending support to the invasion of Iraq or afghanistan. It’s another thing to go to war with Russia. In particular, I’d expect Putin to stir up pro-Soviet sentiments that have gone underground in the former Warsaw Pact nations.
