Watch those POW soldier videos above. My thinking half the reason for
convoy stall is lack of soldier appetite. They might be waiting for the infantry to penetrate the city first.
In early 2007, led by LtCol Bill Jurney, USMC 1/6 Inf began clearing the Mala’ab in Eastern Ramadi, block by block. US Army 1-506 Inf had secured eastern Ramadi in 2006 and had built COP Eagles Nest at the south end of that half of the city.
As the battalion moved from north to south, they encountered numerous IEDs buried in the walls inside of a lot of buildings. Right at the start, I think 2 Marines were killed and a number wounded and evacuated. And of course, the Al qaeda insurgents were there as well.
He said that after the loss of the first two Marines, that “broke the seal” on the fight. He had thought that they had might have been more reticent / hesitant UNTIL they started taking serious casualties. At that point, with those early losses, the rest of the TF basically pushed through the remaining part of that half of the city, clearing it methodically, but with more aggression.
In the end, there were more losses. It definitely sucks. I lost friends there as well. But, that was their own D-Day. It was I guess maybe a call to action for that unit to go out and finish the job.
While that was just 1 battalion, in 1 part of the city, that definitely epitomized the overall fight to take back Ramadi. And that definitely set the model for the 2007 surge across Baghdad. Ultimately, they won the West, which was definitely key to winning the war in Iraq.
