People say that Putin can't back down now because he has committed too much
towards his cause (whatever that is now). At the same time, I'm not sure NATO can afford to lose the PR battle in this war particularly when so much effort has been spent NATO is the "good guy" and Russia is the "bad guy." If NATO somehow ended up "turning heel" (to borrow a pro wrestling expression), then I'm not sure NATO could recover from that and still win the war.
Now what is really going to be interesting to see play out is what happens when a leader's goals (of a NATO member) doesn't align with the people's goals. For example, the people may want to see all NATO members protected from an attack, but just as long as it doesn't mean that their troops have to go help protect the country.
