SEC fans seem to be a completely different breed of fans

so I could see them still be very interested in a FL vs. OU or FL vs. TX SEC Championship Game. Even if the Championship Game was Kentucky/South Carolina vs. Mizzou/TAMU, I could still see it pull in decent ratings within the SEC footprint. Now it may not do as good as the Big Ten, but it should be at least on par with the ACC, Big XII, and Pac-12 games even if those games include 1 or 2 marquee names from the conference.

I believe the ACC's problem is it held on to its "basketball-first" identity for too long. Even if the ACC had added WVU instead of BC and opted to go with these divisions (protected cross-division pairings),

Atlantic/Coastal
WVU-UMD
VT-UVA
Wake-Duke
NC State-UNC
Clemson-GT
FSU-Miami or Miami-FSU

I'm not sure the ACC's football image would have improved all that much. In order for the ACC's football imagine to improve significantly, I suspect all the members would have to take a "football-first" mentality until the football product was truly on par with the basketball product. I'm not sure the members have that kind of commitment even before the ACC expanded to 14 football members.
