Agree that smaller, rivalry-based conferences ...

were lost during the past 20 years of conference realignment. IMHO, the B1G's addition of Maryland and Rutgers didn't improve the B1G football product. It just added more people to the B1G footprint. Rutgers was the big winner in that deal, not the B1G. Maryland's president got greedy and left the ACC for more money. Lost in that move were all of Maryland's conference rivalries that were built up over 50 years. Sure, they got Penn State but PSU has dominated Maryland in football like UNC has dominated Clemson in Chapel Hill in men's hoops. Some Terps fans used to tell me that they never felt part of the ACC being on the northern fringe, but the ACC added Pitt and Syracuse plus Tech years earlier to give them more regional rivalries. UVA was their top rival with Duke in basketball. IMHO, Syracuse would have been a natural rivalry in basketball and in lacrosse. Maryland never gave the "new" ACC a chance. College realignment is based on fear more than anything else. Fear is the biggest motivator and manipulator. It always will be.
