The NFL model works because in their "world" only 32 teams exist

Whereas in college you have over 200 schools competing in DI football split between 2 subdivisions. In order for the NFL model to work in college, the ACC would have to be content playing games against only themselves. You don't see the NFL competing against the CFL or any of the other pro leagues in the world.

Plus, it has already been tried at the college level and it wasn't well received by at least half of the members and/or the fans of the schools. So I do understand why a conference may be hesitant to make the same mistake the WAC did in the late '90s. Once the SEC expands to 16 members, it wouldn't surprise me if the SEC decides to stick with permanent divisions by moving Alabama and Auburn to the East and Mizzou to the West.
