It isn't "urban myth" that ND and Navy are tied at the hip.


While maybe not tied at the hip, they are very close.

The Department of the Navy guaranteed that ND would remain open during WWII by placing one of it special schools there during the war. ND was in danger of closing it's doors due to such a loss of students after the war started.

ND remembers that, and after that they guaranteed a game with Navy every year as long as Navy wanted to play it.

Would ND become a full member of the ACC without Navy. Sure they could. But if Navy wanted to come with them, rest assured ND would be a strong advocate for them.

And rest assured of one other thing. If ND said to ACC they'd come aboard for all sports including football only if Navy was included, Navy would be in the ACC.
