It's about balancing fans, TV markets, and academics

WVU has maybe 50% more fans than UConn but no TV markets and they would have to significantly alter their sports admission standards to join the ACC (I think this holds true for several Big 12 schools)so could they continue to field a competitive product in football? They would have no national appeal if they don't.

UConn has academics and proximity to the largest college football market, NYC. It is also a basketball power, something else the ACC values. IF UConn could break through competitively in football, their growth potential for viewing audience is excellent.

If this is a local TV market based exercise, then Temple and USF become similarly attractive. Per the 2011 NYT article, Philly (#7) and Tampa/St Pete (#9) are larger college football markets than the Washington metro area.

As much as I personally like Navy, it is the choice only if it finalizes the deal with ND. They could increase exposure in the DC area for recruiting but again, that benefit can be said for Temple and USF. VT has a NoVa presence regardless. The ND connection is really the only reason to have Navy on the menu.

The more I think about it, I'm not sure how Cincy makes any list for the ACC. They are not an obvious choice for any reason other than maybe getting the ACC on a couple Ohio cable plans.
