From my seat, I think it was absolutely perfect...
ACC games are on a rotation similar to basketball, so each team knows who they are playing a year or two (or three) in advance.
So the coaches knew last year that which ACC teams they would be playing this year.
They commented to me right before the NCAA bids came out that they would miss Duke and Notre Dame this year so they would need to schedule aggressively to bump the RPI.
They knew they basically had the entire team returning and they felt very, very good about Lemely so it wasn't a terrible gamble to swing hard. Even if you lose some of those games (like Alabama), it doesn't crush your RPI (and in some cases, it actually helps you).
As a side note, last year Clemson won the ACC regular season, but because their RPI was in the 20s, they didn't get to host and were sent to Alabama. Softball really, really values RPI so scheduling is important.
