Just reading about age requirements over time- I had no idea 16 was min age


from Wiki:
Prior to 1991 the minimum age to purchase tobacco products was 16 years of age, then in 2000 was raised from 16 to 18 and yet again was raised from 18 to 21 in 2020.
So it seems like the guy at my local 7-11 was in fact breaking the law by selling to middle schoolers in the mid-80s...but like you said, it was not enforced.

And I wasn't paying attention to the change in 2020, but apparently there was no grandfather clause like there was when drinking age went from 18-21. A 19 year old could smoke one day in VA, and the next day, the law said they had to wait until they turned 21.
