Well, they were thinking

that they genuinely didn't know smoking was THAT bad for their health, and that it was so universally socially acceptable that only losers didn't smoke.

Our knowledge and attitudes (and thus our policies) on smoking have changed an awful lot within my lifetime.

I had the good fortune to have never taken a single puff of a cigarette in my life. My mom smoked when I was little, and I always thought it was kinda gross. Then my first job was cleaning some offices, and the ones that belonged to smokers were the worst. Plus in high school, the smoking patio only had the goths and metalheads. While quite a few of the cool kids did smoke, they only did so socially at a party on the weekends, not huddled on the patio in February in the middle of the school day. So I had both no interest and no credible peer pressure to ever try a cigarette.
