If they want to waste money on an unproven player, meh. It's Athletic Depts
where the real change is needed.
I would love for there to be a cap on overall Athletic Dept spending each year (with guarantees that the non-football sports get sufficient % of funding). And all that TV money should then go to the actual university instead of a small pool of coaches.
Simple example (for demonstration purposes only):
- School gets $50 million in athletic revenue per year
- Athletic Dept spending cap is $30 million per year
- 50% of the athletic budget must be spent on non-football sports at a minimum ($15 million)
- Any money above the cap would go to the university, $20 million. This could then be used for buildings (academic OR athletic), faculty, student services, etc.
- And coach salaries would have to fit within that overall structure. They could get their own endorsement deals for extra money, but no more insane salaries or buyouts from the school.
