It may not be a matter of whether it helps or hurts the conference
though. Some conferences may opt to stick with the "traditional model" for various reasons. For example, the conferences that currently use geographic based divisions (i.e. Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC, etc.) and 1 division happens to be more dominant, then those conferences could conclude that switching to the no division format could increase the likelihood that the 2 participating teams will end up coming from the same former division majority of the time.
Example purposes only
Big Ten: Michigan vs. Penn State (East Division)
Pac-12: USC vs. Arizona State (South Division)
SEC: LSU vs. Alabama (West Division)
Heck even the ACC could find that majority of the time the conference championship game involves 2 teams from either the former Atlantic Division or Coastal Division. If majority of the games end up involving teams from only 1 former division, then how will the schools and their fans of teams associated with the other former division react to this new reality? I could see a decent percentage conclude that the current way is "better" because at least both divisions are being represented in the conference championship game.
