Previous realignment activity was largely based on expansion... expanding to 16 teams, expanding geographic footprint to support widespread growth of conference linear TV networks. (Side question: Has the inclusion of Rutgers, for example, proven to be beneficial for the B10 network?) There was a fair amount of "filling out" activity whereby if you were comfortably a top-60 team in terms of football success or tenure in a Power 5 conference, you were comfortable that you would find a home.

Now I'm worried about consolidation. While the SEC is expanding in isolation, this could lead to overall consolidation in the upper echelon of college football. In that case, the throw-in schools could be in trouble. You could argue whether VT would fall into that category but we would certainly not be in control of our future.
