opinion. My opinion is you are dead wrong about the going public part in this case. There is absolutely no harm to responding when contacted since the contact was not initiated by the young lady or her family.
The VT coach handled the situation horribly. Hopefully he will learn from his mistake and show more class in the future. If he wins this will only be a footnote but, if he loses or handles future situations similarly his future could be rocky with very few allies.
I think most hokies and people who have followed the program for any length of time wish the young lady and her family well and feel sad the situation seems to have been handled poorly. Most have higher expectations for how representatives of VT conduct business on behalf of the school.
