Who or what is served by fielding 20+ teams at VT?
I get that the students on sholarship come out pretty good.
But is the school served by having a field hockey team? Is the state? Is the NRV? Do VT grads and fans enjoy it? If so, how many?
So what is the point?
VT doesn't officially sponsor rugby or hockey, but quite a few VT students and fans enjoy watching those teams play here or there. They play against more local competition and enjoy themselves a ton. They would like scholarships, but don't need them to enjoy their niche sports.
Hundred of VT students enjoy intramural sports too. Their girlfriends and moms can come and watch them compete in those too.
So what is the benefit of VT spending tens of millions of dollars to prop up these nonrevenue sports?
Sounds like the SEC's got the right idea here. If sports have enough interest to earn the schools massive amounts of money and exposure, invest in those sports. If sports do not, then allow those sports to remain the high school and intramural affairs they are.
