Is it "healthy" for the game to have some schools (aka the P5 schools)
to operate as a quasi professional organization by "needing" or even "demanding" large revenue streams in order to support paying coaches hugh salaries and building NFL-like stadiums? Yes, I understand that the P5 are taking advantage of an opportunity to make as much money as they can. However, it doesn't mean that the schools truly need it or always putting the extra money to good use. Sometimes it seems like schools are spending it on trivial things (i.e. barbershop for the male players, indoor waterfall in athletic building, video game consoles in the athletic building, leather couches for the players to relax in, etc.) just so the school can continue to claim not-for-profit status on their taxes. If DI-FBS G5, DI-FCS, DII, and DIII programs can do just fine without needing professional league standard athletic facilities, then why is it a "must" for DI-FBS P5 programs?
For the record my doesn't necessarily reflect my personal view on the issue. It is based on various discussions I have scene from various media outlets on the topic and is often the devil's advocate position for whenever someone takes the position that the G5 schools don't need the P5 level of revenue to function. Personally I am not sure how I feel about the issue. On one hand if those are rules that the school agree to play by then so be it. However, if schools are treating their athletic programs as "professional" business (aka "big business") and less like "amateur business," then have schools lost sight of the original intent of the NCAA?
