Why add Fordham when Stony Brook is available?
Fordham is a private university. Whereas Stony Brook is a public university and a member of the SUNY system. Stony Brook is also located in New York City (Stony Brook is a hamlet on Long Island). Stony Brook has a larger student body than Fordham (25,272 vs. 15,189). Fordham does have a larger endowment ($665.5 million vs. $247.4 million as of 2015). Fordham football currently competes in the Patriot League. Whereas Stony Brook competes in the CAA. Neither school has a football stadium large enough to meet the current DI-FCS requirements (Stony Brook's Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium = approx. 8K vs. Fordham's Coffey Field = approx. 7K). If a school is going to switch subdivisions in order to join the Big XII, then I would think a public school would be more likely to do it.
