Very Easy. This chart demonstrates part of it.

Louisville has a larger athletic budget, does better in most of the sports than, and has dramatically better facilities than both Maryland and Rutgers. The comparison is not even close. The ACC got a very competitive athletic department that is rich with funds, funds before having to depend on any conference television rights, and an athletic department growing rapidly into an athletic power.

The ACC lost an athletic department that is a financial basket case, is downsizing, with decrepit facilities (Wallace Loh's description), and is seen as a complete afterthought in its own town.

The ACC failed to add one of the worst athletic departments in the United States in Rutgers.

The Big XII made a colossal mistake in it's decision making not taking Louisville. Just about anyone from the Big XII will tell you that.

The Big Ten was looking for cable boxes and not athletic contribution. They got the cable boxes along with terrible athletic contributions that will drag down their product over time. This is especially true with Rutgers. Maryland will contribute some stuff.

Louisville uplifts the ACC's product by comparison. Yes I'm pro ACC, and the ACC has replaced anything lost by Maryland and more. I didn't want to kick Maryland out, but we got an upgrade from a College Athletics perspective.

Did we downgrade academically? We lost the number 11 ranked academic institution in the ACC at the time and replaced with number 15. Meh? Splitting hairs.
