Umm go where?

The Big Ten got 1 team in the Playoff (Michigan State) and 2 teams in the New Year's Day bowls (Rose Bowl = Iowa and Fiesta Bowl = Ohio State). The Committee isn't required to select the loser of a CCG for a New Year's Day bowl game especially if a division champion had a worse record than the second place team in the other division. So if the Big Ten could only get 2 teams in the Playoff/New Year's Day bowls, then it is possible that both teams could come from the same division.

As far as why Missouri is in the East Division, there is an obvious explanation. The SEC places high importance on "the Iron Bowl," the "Third Saturday in October," the "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry," and the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party." You can ignore the Cocktail Party because it isn't impacted by where the SEC places Missouri.

The only reason the SEC came up with protected cross-division rivalries back in 1992 is because it wanted to keep the "Third Saturday in October" and the "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry" as annual games. If Missouri was placed in the West, then that means Auburn would be placed in the East. As a result, the "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry" can continue as a divisional game. However, Alabama will then have to decide whether it wants to keep the "Iron Bowl" or the "Third Saturday in October" as its protected cross-division game and maintain the rivalry as an annual game. The SEC originally started out with 2 protected cross-division games, but dropped it down to 1 a few years later. Given that the conference has 7 teams in each division, I don't think the math works out to where every school could have 2 protected cross-division games. At least I am assuming the SEC explored that option before deciding to stick Missouri in the East. Hence why I have been saying for a couple years on here that the SEC will probably look to expand west so it could move both Alabama schools to the East and drop the protected cross-division games altogether.
