Football has a nice return on investment. Tell me why nonrevs are important

Are the nonrevenue sports good for the school, community, fans, or students? The only real argument could be made for the student athletes. However, I'm not so sure flying and busing them all around the nation during the school year is all that good for them. It's kinda cool, but they could find plenty of enjoyment competing against Cinn., Miami of Ohio, WVU and Michigan each season.
